My name is Ryan Bemis and I am a 21 year-old junior, majoring in journalism at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Writing has always been something that I show great passion in because I love to push the envelope to see what my potential is.
I decided to enroll in the UMass film studies program while studying journalism. I hope to be able to utilize my writing skills and incorporate them into some aspect of film. Movies have been a part of my life since my childhood and I have been able to expand my intellectual horizons based on the things I watch. My favorite thing to do with film and movies is to draw parallels between what I see on the screen and what goes on in the world around me.
The writing process in itself has always been something that appeals to me. In my opinion the best part of writing is brainstorming because I believe this is where the magic of creation happens. When you get together with a group of people and toss around ideas anything can happen. Sometimes you may think you have the perfect idea but quickly realize critical flaws based off of what the group’s consensus is.
I am proud to say I have an open mind and show no fear in hearing another’s perspective. I feel that one of the best ways to simultaneously become a better writer and also a better person is to listen to other people’s point of view. It always helps listening to more than your own input because it allows you to reinforce your own ideas by branching off of another’s contribution. I hope to develop the crucial skills I need to have a successful career upon gradation.
